Birding in Pico Bonito is World Class!

Pico Bonito offers some of the best bird watching opportunities in Central America. Honduras is only now trying to market itself seriously as a birding destination. As such, it is far behind other destinations, such as Costa Rica and Panama. The truth is that there are some outstanding bird sightings to be made in Honduras! There are several areas in Honduras that have a reputation as an outstanding bird watching destination, such as Lake Yojoa, the Copan valley.

The remote Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve iais another great bird watching site, but lacks basic infrastructure. The reality is that the North Coast, between the cities of Tela and La Ceiba, offers unparalleled bird diversity and easy access to nature for that purpose.

The Lodge at Pico Bonito, is perhaps the one tourism related business that has made a name for themselves as a successful bird watching destination. You can sight many of the elusive species, such as the lovely cotinga, on the trails around the Lodge at Pico Bonito. However, outstanding birding is available throughout the Pico Bonito National Park. There are now several independent, free lance guides that can help you discover some of the many lovely and elusive birds of the area.

Birds are not only abundant, they are diverse. For example, from the comfort of a hammock at La Villa de Soledad you can see many birds. These include keel billed toucans, collared aracaris, turquoise browed motmots, a variety of hummingbirds, flycatchers, trogons, tanagers, woodpeckers and oropendolas. A short walk towards the Cangrejal River will allow you to see kingfishers, sun bitterns, parrots and owls.

The Cangrejal river has several good trails for bird watching. The main dirt road is also an excellent place to see these birds. The Lovely Honduran Emerald Hummingbird, which is endemic to Honduras, has its main habitat on the south side of Pico Bonito, towards the Aguan Valley;  A trip to the south side of the Pico Bonito National Park is an easy day tour. This allows you to see birds that inhabit a totally different environment. It will surely be a compliment to your Pico Bonito birding experience!

The time of the year, of course, has an impact on the variety of bird species you can see. During the winter months there are many different migratory birds that travel south from North America.
